About the gemstone dealer register

What is a gemstone dealer?

A gemstone dealer buys and sells loose coloured stones, cut or rough, to jewellers, collectors and the trade. The stone is the product. It arrives unset and priced on its own merits, and that is the line between a dealer and a jeweller who happens to keep a few sapphires in the safe. Past that point the trade splits. Some houses buy rough near the deposit and cut it themselves. Others work from finished parcels bought in Jaipur or Bangkok or Idar-Oberstein, sorted and carried to whichever market pays. Both kinds sit on this register. The difference shows up the moment you ask where a stone came from. A cutter can usually walk you back to the mine and say what heat it has seen. A trader who bought the parcel already finished may only be able to name the person who sold it to them, which is a shorter chain than it sounds.

Where can I find reputable gemstone dealers?

Start with a record that shows its working. Every entry here names the page it was built from and the date that page was read, so the source is yours to check rather than ours to assert. Records are drawn from what a house publishes about itself: where it is registered, how long it says it has traded, which laboratories it names, what it commits to in writing on treatment. Where a claim could not be corroborated the record says so, rather than quietly leaving the line blank. Nothing on the register is paid for. No dealer buys a position and no dealer buys a mark. Standing sits in its own column, apart from the record, so a house that has only been catalogued is never dressed up as one that has been checked. Entries link through to the stones and origins a house actually handles, which is usually a faster way in than a list of names.

How verification works

Questions, answered

Can I sell gemstones to a dealer?

Plenty of houses on the register buy as well as sell, and each record shows the material they handle. We take no part in transactions and do not broker, value or buy stones ourselves. Approach a dealer directly, and get any offer in writing before the stone leaves your hands.

What is the best place to buy gemstones?

No single best place exists, and anywhere claiming to be one is selling you something. Look instead for a seller who puts origin and treatment in writing, names the laboratory behind the report, and will take the stone back if it is not what they said it was.

Are the dealers on this register verified?

Not yet. Every record carries the sourced mark today, which means it was built from published material and nothing has been checked against it. When a house passes verification its record will carry a struck mark and the date that mark was issued.

Does GemsVerified sell gemstones?

No. GemsVerified is a register, not a shop. Zaffirro Ltd runs it out of London, it holds no stock and takes no commission, and buyers deal with the houses directly.

Which gemstones are worth money?

Species, origin, treatment, size and quality all pull on the figure at once, and origin by itself can move an otherwise identical stone tenfold; an unheated Kashmir sapphire and a heated Thai one of the same weight are not really in the same conversation. GemsVerified does not appraise or publish valuations. For a number you can act on, commission an independent appraisal from a qualified gemmologist.
