Edelsteinminen im Steinkaulenberg
Follow a guided route through lit tunnels past agate, rock crystal, amethyst, smoky quartz and calcite in place, with the option of a separate outdoor gem camp and digging field where visitors search stocked ground for stones.
The visit
Why it is worth the trip
Idar-Oberstein built a cutting industry on these local agate and quartz deposits, so the mine is the starting point of the trade that still runs the town.
Before you go
The operator states that booking is made online through Ticket Regional, that helmets are provided and ordinary street clothes are fine, and that group size is capped at 25. The gem camp runs at 10:00am, 12:30pm and 3:00pm and lasts about two hours; its digging fields are restocked daily with minerals and gemstones sourced from around the world rather than dug from the mine itself.
