Extinction

Dark areas in the face-up view where facets return no light, most visible in deep-pavilioned and dark-toned stones. A little moving shadow is life; large fixed dead zones flatten the colour the stone paid for in tone. Extinction is the opposite failure to a window. One leaks light, the other swallows it, and the space between the two failures is simply good cutting.
