The producing regions

Minas Gerais anchors production, with the pegmatite districts around Governador Valadares and Teofilo Otoni trading tourmaline, aquamarine and beryl in commercial volume. Ouro Preto remains the world source for imperial topaz. Paraiba state gave its name to the copper bearing tourmaline discovered at Sao Jose da Batalha in the late 1980s, still the most valuable tourmaline on the market. Emerald comes from Belmont and Itabira, and alexandrite from the Hematita deposit.

Trade character

Brazilian material moves through established cutting and export houses in Teofilo Otoni, Governador Valadares and Sao Paulo, many of them family firms of long standing with direct mine relationships. Treatments vary by species: aquamarine and morganite are routinely heated, some topaz is irradiated, and Paraiba tourmaline is commonly heated, so declaration practice matters across the whole Brazilian range.

Buying Brazilian stones

For copper bearing tourmaline, insist on a laboratory report confirming both the copper content and, where claimed, the Brazilian origin, since African material trades under the Paraiba name at lower prices. For the wider range, a dealer with documented disclosure practice is the practical safeguard.
