Zambia — verified dealers & sourcing guide

Zambia is the second force in world emerald and, by volume of fine material, arguably the first. The deposits of the Kafubu belt on the Copperbelt produce stones whose deeper, cooler green and better clarity have moved from being priced as an alternative to Colombia to being sought in their own right.
The Kafubu belt
Mining centres on the area south west of Kitwe, where emerald grows in talc magnetite schist. The sector combines one of the largest emerald mines in the world with licensed small scale workings, and rough reaches the market through auctions in Lusaka and Singapore as well as through the local trade in Kitwe and Ndola. This auction system gives Zambian emerald an unusually documented route from mine to market.
Character of the material
Zambian emerald owes its slightly bluish, saturated green to iron alongside chromium. Crystals tend to be cleaner than Colombian material, which allows lighter clarity enhancement; a meaningful share of production is sold with only minor oiling, and untreated stones appear often enough to sustain a premium market. Laboratory reports state the enhancement level, and the difference between none, minor and moderate moves prices substantially.
Beyond emerald
The country also produces fine aquamarine, amethyst from the Mapatizya field, and tourmaline, though emerald dominates its reputation.
Buying Zambian stones
Ask for the enhancement level in writing and for an origin opinion where the premium depends on it. GemsVerified verifies the dealers listed below for legitimacy, certification practice and disclosure standards; it does not certify individual stones. Their declared treatments and origins give a comparable basis for shortlisting before you make contact.
